Greetings from the homestead! This week has been a whirlwind of activity as we’ve been busy tending to our little homestead. The beds have seen a transformation, with soil being turned over in preparation for new seeds to take root. Our canning station has been a hub of productivity, with an array of colorful fruits and vegetables transformed into jars of summer’s bounty. Amidst the aromatic jars, fermentation projects bubble away, promising tangy delights in the coming weeks. As we bid farewell to summer, we’re also welcoming fall with open arms, carefully planting a variety of cool-season vegetables. The animals have been showered with care, their well-being being our top priority. And speaking of eggs, we’ve been practicing the age-old technique of water glassing to ensure we have fresh, farm-raised eggs even as the seasons change. It’s been a week of satisfying work and promising endeavors here on our vibrant homestead.
Throughout August, our homestead has been buzzing with planting activity. We’ve put in the last batches of green beans, corn, summer squash, and cucumbers to capture the essence of summer. Looking ahead to fall, we’ve sown arugula, spinach, lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, bunching onions, parsnips, bok choy, cilantro, radish, and turnips. And for a touch of fun, we’ve planted late potatoes as an experiment to see how big they’ll grow by Christmas. Our garden is a medley of both the current season’s delights and the promise of the one to come.
